I never knew my grandma very well. I recall going over to her house after school on several occasions and she’d make my sister and I an after school sandwich and potato chips and we’d get to watch cable TV (it was a luxury!) while my Mom and her chatted. Afterwards we’d head outside and explore their large property and gardens.
We’d frequently head out the back door which was right off of the kitchen area, and would pass a shelf full of books. Cookbooks to be exact. Long story short I never knew what happened to all of those books after grandma died, but recently I came across several of them. I spent the afternoon glancing through them, looking at all of the dog eared pages and notes next to ones she had altered.
In the back of one cookbook I found an old piece of paper taped on with a BBQ sauce recipe. I decided to make this recipe for an outdoor meal, to see if it was as good as her note suggested.
It was. It’s not super sweet like a lot of the BBQ sauce that we buy in the store. It has good flavor that I would describe as zesty. I decided to make some pulled pork sliders and use half of the BBQ sauce as a marinade, then keep the remainder for topping them with.
BBQ Hack:
I actually purchased a 6 pound pork roast and then slow cooked the meat overnight – then kept the meat and BBQ sauce warm on the grill while I toasted the buns. It’s a great way to BBQ for a group of people but be ahead of the game and most everything already prepared.
Tip: Keep VIVA® paper towels on hand as well as Kleenex® Wet Wipes Gentle Clean
The BBQ Sauce and pulled pork is pretty messy though (aren’t those some of the best meals?) So I kept some VIVA® paper towels on hand as well as these new Kleenex® Wet Wipes Gentle Clean. I found them in the tissue aisle at my local Fred Meyer’s and they are perfect for wiping off your hands and face for messy meals like this. I like them because there aren’t any harsh chemicals in them and they are really thick and soft.
Once the buns are toasted and everyone is ready to eat, all you have to do is line up the slider buns, then scoop a generous amount of pulled pork onto each one. Top with more BBQ sauce, then add some fresh coleslaw.
I then placed the top bun on and added skewers to keep them in place.
How to make Zesty BBQ Sauce and Pork Sliders:
Ingredients
- 4 1/2 cups water
- 3 15 ounce cans of tomato sauce
- 2-4 medium onions, diced
- 9 tablespoons of vineager
- 6 tablespoons of sugar
- 9 tablespoons of worcestershire sauce
- 3 teaspoons of salt
- 3 teaspoons of chilli powder
- 3-4 teapsoons of dry mustard
- For the Pork Sliders:
- Zesty BBQ sauce
- 6-7 pound pork roast
- slider or hamburger buns
- fresh coleslaw
Instructions
For the BBQ sauce:
Mix all ingredients into a large pan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat for approximately one hour until liquid is reduced and sauce is thickened.
For the Pork Sliders:
Place pork roast into slow cooker. Cover roast with BBQ sauce and cook on low for 10 hours. Removed lid for last hour to allow sauce to thicken. Using two forks pull meat apart. Transfer to a cast iron dish when ready to assemble sliders. Keep meat and remaining BBQ sauce warm on the grill while toasting the buns. Top with fresh coleslaw and enjoy!
Makes 10-12 servings - and plenty of BBQ sauce left over!
