‘What the heck is Turmeric anyways?‘ I asked myself a few weeks ago. As a nurse, I consider myself fairly educated when it comes to vitamins and supplements, but honestly I wasn’t very familiar with Turmeric. So I did some research myself.
It turns out that Turmeric is a culinary spice that is most commonly found in Indian foods and things like curry. It’s what is used to color mustard and is a relative to ginger. Upon my searching I realized that Turmeric isn’t just some little spice – it supports some pretty amazing things. Emerging research shows that turmeric supports healthy liver function, supports healthy brain function, and supports exercise recovery/offsets muscle pain associated with overexertion.
Things That Turmeric Supports:
Healthy inflammation response – Inflammation is how the body reacts to something that is an irritant or injury. Normally, the part of the body becomes red, swollen, sore, and warm. For something acute, inflammation is actually helpful, but sometimes things happen inside our bodies that causes inflammation to be a chronic issue. Turmeric can help with healthy inflammation response because of the chemicals inside of turmeric.
Healthy skin – Healthy skin is happy skin. I know many of us are always looking for tips and tricks to maintain healthy skin. Turmeric actually has antioxidants in it, which can promote healthy skin.
Healthy joints- As we age, sometimes our joints get, well, ‘tired’. Joints can also become sore with actives, like strenuous workout routines, etc. Some individual’s experience joint aches and inflammation. Turmeric can help with healthy inflammation response (as mentioned above), and can also help reduce pain.
Provides antioxidant properties – In addition to promoting healthy skin, these antioxidant properties can also benefit your hair and immune system as well!
Protect cognitive capabilities – Ever get worried thinking about your cognition as you age? Well, one of the chemical components of Turmeric is curcumin, and it can help help promote functioning of the neurotransmitters in our brains, meaning it can help protect our cognitive capabilities!
Turmeric can be added as a spice to culinary dishes, and drank as tea, but capsules are another great way to take Turmeric. At Costco they have youtheory® Turmeric Extra Strength 120 Capsules in a new formula. In their old formula there was 450mg turmeric per 3 tablets, but now in the new formula (youtheory Turmeric Extra Strength 120 Capsules) you get 1,000mg of turmeric per 2 capsules! You now get 3x the amount of turmeric per capsule, in vegan capsules. The new formula has a completely orange lid and states 1,000 mg on the front of the label. The youtheory Turmeric capsules are an allergy-friendly product. The capsules are appropriate for vegetarians and vegans, it’s hypoallergenic, and it is free of gluten ingredients.
A fun fact about the youtheory Turmeric Capsules is that these capsules are enhanced with Black Pepper extract, and what that does is actually improve the aborption of the turmeric 20x more than regular turmeric! Normal turmeric is notorious for being poorly absorbed because most of it breaks down in the GI tract before it can enter the bloodstream.
After finding out about all of the amazing things that turmeric can do, I started taking the youtheory Turmeric Extra Strength Capsules this past week. With all of the extra stress that I’ve had over the summer in addition to my health scare, I am trying to making some small positive changes to getting myself back on track to feeling as good as possible, because I want to live life to the fullest.
